Dabbling with colour and paint During this 3 hour workshop you will be shown some painting techniques and the process of mixing colours. An excellent start to making future paintings. We will be working in acrylics and all materials will be supplied. For complete beginners or those wishing to refresh their drawing skills. The Art in your Body In this workshop Lyne Pringle will lead participants through a gentle and expressive Yoga warm-up followed by exercises to evoke a physical response to the works of art hanging in ‘The Studio’ – all to very groovy music! It will be a fun experience designed to unlock the creative potential in our cells and is suitable for anyone of any age who has a body and loves to move. Mothers and children welcome.	Lyne Pringle has over 30 years of experience working as a dance/theatre artist in New Zealand, Australia and New York and is deeply committed to the development of New Zealand performing arts. Makin' summut out o' nowt Two workshop tutorials on " Makin' summut out o' nowt " (to use Yorkshire parlance,) will be held from 12 till 2 on both days of the open studio weekend. Up to six participants at each workshop are asked to bring something that they've found discarded in their local neighbourhood, timber perhaps but not necessarily so. All participants must be aware that they attend at their own risk!	(Amongst other things,) Woodworker Alexander Douglas Wright makes free standing or fitted personal and or site specific furniture. Flax Weaving In this Workshop participants will learn the basics of flax weaving and will learn to make some small creations to take away with them.	Chris DeVeld is a local craftsman of many talents, who has been weaving for 10 years. He first learnt to weave at Whitirea polytechnic over 2 years worth of night classes. Jelly this isn’t – simple printmaking using a gelatine plate This workshop uses a printing plate made from a slab of gelatine. You will learn how to use this printmaking technique to make images on paper and fabric. The inks and paints used are non –toxic and the plate can be composted or buried after use.	Cathy Trewby is a Berhampore resident who graduated stage 3 (Advanced ) in June 2009 from The Learning Connexion focussing on textiles and printmaking. In her art practice she is keen on printmaking techniques that do not require access to a press and where there is an immediacy of creation. "I've always wanted to draw" Come to this workshop where you will be taken through some drawing and observational techniques that are very useful when staring to make an observational drawing. You will be more than surprised with your results. A great way to spend 2 hours. For complete beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills. All materials supplied. Stencil Screen-Printing Participants will learn how to make their own stencils and then screen-print them on to t-shirts, fabric and anything else you can think of. Bring along a t-shirt or whatever you’d like to print on and any ideas you have of some images you’d like to print.	Gemma Minogue is a local Newtownian, who graduated from illustration and design at Massey University in 2007. She believes unfalteringly in the limitless potential of stencil screen-printing. Design workshop – ‘everybody can design’ There is often a mystique about design and a thought that not everybody can design. Cathy believes everybody can design and this s workshop focuses on techniques that we can all use to help in our creative process. Because of the short time frame the exercises will concentrate on design ideas rather than creating an artwork or working with colour.	Cathy Trewby is a Berhampore resident who graduated stage 3 (Advanced ) in June 2009 from The Learning Connexion focusing on textiles and printmaking. She believes that design concepts are in us all and just need some simple techniques and exercise to unlock them. Newtown Art Trail

A. SUITE (69 Owen St)
As a gallery, since its opening in 2007 we have established a strong stable of artists of which hail from local and international distinction. We specialise in international work not previously seen in Australasia, and also leading New Zealand painters, photographers and sculptors.

B. Duncan Sarjent (91 Constable st)
Duncan Sarjent designs and makes to order contemporary, sustainable furniture for the home, office and shop. I also have a range of bent and mould plywood furniture, phone 0211388482 or visit www.duncansargent.com.

C. Nidus (74 Constable St)
A shop full of interesting objects, furniture, and artwork. Nidus supports New Zealand made work, and features local artists Andrew Missen, Katherine Smyth, Tamara Kan, Mark Ussher, and more

D. Pixel Ink (12 Constable St)
Pixel Ink is run by illustrator Rosalind Clark and her partner Glen Cooper. The Pixel Ink fashion boutique, art gallery and illustration studio is located at 12 Constable Street in the vibrant cultural art centre of Newtown. Pixel Ink Gallery provides a space for emerging and established artists to showcase and sell their works. The gallery specialises in contemporary illustrative art. Their mission is to elevate the status of illustrative art. www.pixelink.co.nz

E. The John St art wall (cnr of John st and Riddiford st)
The artwork on the John street wall has been a collaborative art project. It was created by a variety of local enthusiasts from around the area volunteering their skills. The public has been invited to get involved (via an online website: atlarge.co.nz ) and so far over thirty people have contributed by creating wallpaper stencils, helping to paint the wall and creating the different pieces of artwork currently on display.
Michael Denton has been organizing this project as part of his Masters degree in visual design.

F. Newtown Community and Cultural Centre Exhibition (Cnr. Of Colombo and Rintoul st)
During the Newtown Art Project the Newtown Community and Cultural Centre is hosting a community exhibition of local artist. Open 9am -3pm each day from 5th -10th of March.
Visit on Friday 5th between 10am -2pm to meet local artists at work and have the chance to try making your own print on a book press with artist Basia Smolnicki.

G. Paul Forrest (The Studio – upstairs @ 146 Riddiford Street)
Renowned Wellington artist Paul Forrest will be opening the doors to his Riddiford Street studio and gallery to showcase his recent oil paintings. www.paulforrest.co.nz
His studio is located in the heart of Newtown shops at an infamous location formerly known as The Space. It has been transformed into a spacious, light filled studio where he and his partner, contemporary dancer Lyne Pringle, work and create.

H. Wellington Wood Works (291 Mansfield St)
(Amongst other things,) Woodworker Alexander Douglas Wright makes free standing or fitted personal and or site specific furniture. Please read the previous sentence once more then visit him and his collection of recycled timber at the Newtown depot of Wellington Wood Works, which is down the lane at 291 Mansfield Street
The workshop will be open from two in the afternoon until about eight (or later if busy) in the evening on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Festival weekend.

I. Grass-fiti Project (Macalister Park Hill, Adelaide Road)
This is an outdoor art project carried out by artist Daniel Larose in collaboration with students from Berhampore School.
The grass canvas is the hill on the North End of Macalister Park near the school.

J. Cathy Trewby - Artist and craft card seller (7 Stirling Street, Berhampore)
Cathy is a printmaker, abstract painter and embroiderer as well as working with textiles. She also sells a range of craft cards (Cabbage Tree Cards -named for the large cabbage tree on her property)
She likes to demystify art and art practice and believes in the use of humour and exploring the obvious as a way of communicating. She works from three small studio spaces on her property, one of which will be open on the Arts Trail.

K. Daniel Larose-" Bus -stop gallery and garden creatures " (533 Adelaide Road, Berhampore)
Visit sculptor Daniel Larose at his home studio and garden on Adelaide road, heading towards Island Bay. You will see a fascinating array of weird and wonderful creatures and much more…

With one more month to go until the Newtown Art Project is in full swing it seems timely to start introducing some of the artists who will be involved with the project; watch this space for more to come!
Fergus Collinson

Fergus Collinson is a self-styled Jazz painter, who also writes poetry and creates photo essays. He has published an artist book called “bouncing with Billie...” which features sixty of his art works. You can find out more about him and check out his work online at www.fergus-art.com

Alexander Wright

Paul Forrest
Renowned Wellington artist Paul Forrest will be opening the doors to his Riddiford Street studio and gallery to showcase his recent oil paintings.
“The paintings are what I call contemporary Icon paintings; artwork that takes the viewer into a world where they get a sense of seeing into another dimension. My intention is to create a vision that generates a mind state of stillness and reflection; a place where the eye wants to linger for an extended period of time”.
Paul has been a active member of the Wellington art scene for 20 years with his paintings being held in collections in Australia, The Netherlands, Germany, England, The United states and all over New Zealand.
His studio is located in the heart of Newtown shops at an infamous location formerly known as The Space. It has been transformed into a spacious, light filled studio where he and his partner, contemporary dancer Lyne Pringle, work and create.

F-stop
f/stop is a sub-group of the Wellington Photographic Society which meets once a month to discuss photos captured by members on a set theme. One of the themes in 2009 was "Newtown", and a selection of these images will be exhibited in the Newtown Community Centre during this year's Newtown Festival.
As a “hands on” activity during the Newtown Fair Day, the group will also set up a backdrop on a small section of pavement where they will invite passers-by to have their portrait photographs taken. The objective will be to collect images of men, women and children of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds represented in the Newtown community and by other visitors to the Newtown Festival and the Newtown Fair.
It is planned that the images collected will provide material for an exhibition to be held in conjunction with the 2011 Newtown Festival.

Cathy Trewby

She also holds a Certificate of Embroidery from the Royal School of Needlework (Hampton Court London) A committed feminist since the 1970s Cathy searches for ways to link her art with her life experiences. She likes to demystify art and art practice and believes in the use of humour and exploring the obvious as a way of communicating.
She works from three small studio spaces on her property, one of which will be open on the Arts Trail. Cathy is a printmaker, abstract painter and embroiderer as well as working with textiles. She also sells a range of craft cards (Cabbage Tree Cards named for the large cabbage tree on her property) for artists to create their own works in and these will be available as well.
Cathy will also be running two workshops during the Newtown art project. One will be a printmaking technique using a gelatine plate, and the other is a design workshop.”

Art sites around Newtown?

Planning for the Newtown Art Project is ticking along nicely.

We now have a full schedule of artist workshops which will be advertised and open for people to sign up from sometime in early February. All workshops will be just a gold coin donation to participate.

We are really in need of a few more artists who want to open their studio's to the public and be on the art trail. If you are keen, or know of people who might be -please put the word out. We are also keen to hear of any other art sites around Newtown you think should be on the trail?

The Newtown Art project is an initiative of the Newtown Community and Cultural Centre. It is all about encouraging and celebrating creativity in Newtown and making art accessible to everyone. The project will include; a community exhibition- held at the Newtown Community and cultural centre (Cnr of Colombo and Rintoul sts), a trail of Newtown based Art sites (galleries, artists studios and spectacular artistic interventions!), And a series of artist run workshops open to the community.
There will also be other quirky, weird and wonderful things happening which we will let you know more about closer to the time.
All this is scheduled to happen from the 5th to the 11th of March 2010.
